Overtired Baby Won't Sleep — How to Fix It Tonight

The signs, the rescue plan for tonight, and the three-day reset that stops it repeating.

Quick answer

An overtired baby has too much cortisol and adrenaline on board to fall asleep, which is why they seem wired rather than sleepy. Tonight: dark room, white noise, an early bedtime, and heavy soothing without worrying about habits. Then shorten wake windows and move bedtime earlier for three days to clear the debt.

The fix, step by step.

  1. Recognize it correctly. Overtired looks like arched back, frantic crying, fighting the bottle or breast, second wind, and hyperactivity — not yawning. Yawning and staring are the earlier window you missed.
  2. Rescue tonight without guilt. Use whatever soothes — rocking, feeding, contact — to get them down. One night of heavy soothing will not undo training. Missing sleep entirely will make tomorrow worse.
  3. Move bedtime 30–45 minutes earlier. For three nights. Early bedtime is the fastest tool for clearing sleep debt; late bedtime is the fastest way to deepen it.
  4. Shorten wake windows by 15 minutes. For a few days, aim for the low end of the range for your child's age, then return to normal once nights and naps recover.
  5. Protect the first nap. A solid first nap sets the tone for the whole day. Do whatever it takes to make it happen in a dark room for at least an hour.

If it still isn't working.

Chronic overtiredness that persists past a week of early bedtimes usually means the schedule itself is wrong for your child's age, not that they need less sleep.

A free 15-minute call is usually enough to find the missing piece — book one here.

Quick answers

Common questions.

Why does an overtired baby fight sleep instead of sleeping more?

Missed sleep triggers a stress-hormone response. Cortisol and adrenaline keep the nervous system alert, which is why an overtired baby looks wired rather than sleepy.

How do I know if my baby is overtired or undertired?

Overtired babies cry hard and crash fast once asleep. Undertired babies chat, kick, and play in the crib for 30–45 minutes without distress.

How long does it take to fix overtiredness?

Two to four days of earlier bedtimes and slightly shorter wake windows clears most sleep debt.

Better sleep starts with one call.
