My Baby Wakes Up Every Hour
The mechanism behind hourly wakings, how to rule out the medical causes, and the fix that works within a week.
By Jenna Verrelli, Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant · Updated September 2026
Quick answer
Waking every hour is almost never hunger — it is a sleep-onset association. Your baby surfaces between 45–60 minute sleep cycles and fully wakes because the crib doesn't match how they fell asleep. Change what happens at bedtime, keep the night response identical, and most babies consolidate within 3–7 nights.
The fix, step by step.
- Check the four medical suspects. Ear infection, reflux, sleep-disordered breathing (snoring, mouth breathing, pauses), and iron deficiency all cause frequent waking. Two or more rough weeks with no other explanation warrants a pediatrician visit.
- Fix the daytime schedule. Overtiredness raises cortisol and fragments the night. Use age-appropriate wake windows and get bedtime between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. for children under 3.
- Front-load calories in the day. Full feeds every 3–4 hours awake, no grazing. Babies who snack all day make it up at night by design.
- Change how sleep begins. Into the crib awake at bedtime, every night. This is the step that actually removes the hourly wakings.
- Respond identically at every waking. One protocol from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Inconsistency teaches persistence: if the fifth cry gets picked up, your baby learns to cry five times.
How many night wakings are normal.
| Age | Typical wakings | Night feeds still likely needed |
|---|---|---|
| 0–3 months | 3–5 | 2–4 |
| 4–5 months | 2–3 | 1–2 |
| 6–8 months | 0–2 | 0–1 |
| 9–12 months | 0–1 | 0 |
| 12+ months | 0–1 | 0 |
If it still isn't working.
Hourly waking that continues through two consistent weeks, or that is paired with snoring, sweating, or poor weight gain, should be reviewed by your pediatrician before you keep training.

Quick answers
Common questions.
Why does my baby wake every hour at night all of a sudden?
Sudden hourly waking usually traces to a schedule change, a developmental leap, teething, illness, or a new sleep association introduced during a rough week. If it lasts beyond two weeks it has become a habit and needs a plan, not more waiting.
Is my baby waking because they're hungry?
If a feed puts them straight back to sleep in under five minutes, it is usually comfort, not calories. Real hunger looks like a full vigorous feed. Age, weight gain, and daytime intake decide this — check with your pediatrician before dropping feeds.
Can teething cause waking every hour?
Teething explains two or three rough nights around a tooth breaking through. It does not explain weeks of hourly wakings.
How long does it take to fix frequent night wakings?
Most families see the first long stretch by night three to five, and stable nights within two to three weeks.
