My Baby Fights Sleep and Screams at Bedtime
How to tell overtired from undertired, and the bedtime sequence that stops the nightly battle.

Quick answer
A baby who screams at bedtime is usually mistimed, not defiant. Bedtime too late produces an overtired, cortisol-driven meltdown; bedtime too early produces a fight with no sleep pressure behind it. Match the last wake window to your child's age, run a 20–30 minute identical routine, and hold one response for 7 nights.
The fix, step by step.
- Time the last wake window precisely. Overtired kids fight hard and fall asleep fast once they crash; undertired kids play in the crib for 30–45 minutes without distress. The behavior tells you which lever to move.
- Cap and time the last nap. A nap ending after 3:30–4:00 p.m. for a child under 3 steals the sleep pressure bedtime needs. Cap it and hold the same wake-up time daily.
- Shorten and fix the routine. 20–30 minutes, same order every night: bath or wash, pajamas, feed or milk, two books, song, into bed. Longer routines invite stalling.
- Drop the lights an hour before. Dim lighting and no screens for 60 minutes before bed. Bright light suppresses melatonin exactly when you need it.
- Hold one calm, boring response. Whatever you choose — checks, a chair, silent returns — keep it identical for at least seven nights. Escalating attention is what extends the screaming.
Last wake window before bedtime.
| Age | Last wake window | Target bedtime |
|---|---|---|
| 4–6 months | 2–2.5 hours | 6:30–7:30 p.m. |
| 6–9 months | 2.5–3.25 hours | 6:30–7:30 p.m. |
| 9–15 months | 3.25–4 hours | 6:30–7:30 p.m. |
| 15 months–3 years | 4.5–5.5 hours | 7:00–8:00 p.m. |
| 3–6 years | 6–12 hours | 7:00–8:00 p.m. |
If it still isn't working.
If the fight lasts more than 45 minutes for over a week despite correct timing, the routine usually has a hidden hand-off problem — a different parent, a different order, or a feed that has crept back into the last five minutes.

Quick answers
Common questions.
Why does my baby scream as soon as I put them in the crib?
Because the crib signals the end of the condition they associate with sleep — being held, fed, or rocked. Once sleep begins in the crib, the screaming at drop-off usually collapses within three to five nights.
Should bedtime be earlier if my baby fights sleep?
Usually yes. Overtiredness is far more common than undertiredness, and moving bedtime 20–30 minutes earlier for a week is the fastest diagnostic test you can run.
Is bedtime screaming harmful?
Short-term protest crying inside a responsive, loving routine has not been shown to affect attachment or stress hormones in peer-reviewed follow-up studies. Prolonged nightly distress with no plan is worth reviewing with a professional.
